| At CommuniCare Health Centers, our Outreach & Health Education activities are an important part of our mission. Each year we participate in a variety of community and neighborhood Health Fairs and other educational events. These events allow us to educate the public on our organization and on health education topics that are important to our patients and potential patients.
Many uninsured and medically underserved are not aware of our organization, our mission, or how we can help them if they lack access to care in the areas of medical, dental and behavioral health services.
Information is valuable and the more we are able to educate our patients about health topics that may affect them and their family members, such as diabetes, heart disease, weight management, periodontal disease, asthma and depression, the more that they can position themselves to be proactive in their care.
We also hold events like CommuniCaring for Kids (for children up to 18 years old) and CommuniCaring for Seniors (for senior citizens over 65 years old) to provide education, community resource information, and health screenings, that target patients with similar health challenges. We also offer free health screenings and access to immunizations at some events and at certain times of the year. Screenings that we typically offer are:
- Diabetes glucose testing
- Heart Disease blood pressure measurement & monitoring
- Weight Management Body Mass Index calculations
Every year, CommuniCare promotes national awareness events including Mental Health Month, Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, Nutrition Month, Cervical Health Awareness Month and American Heart Month in addition to many others.
CommuniCare Health Centers is committed to significantly expanding our Outreach efforts in 2009 and hopes to reach more residents of Bexar and Hays Counties than ever before.
