CommuniCare Health Centers, has been serving the San Antonio community since 1972. In 2009, CommuniCare served approximately 45,000 patients, and delivered over 152,000 medical, dental, and behavioral health visits. 

Our history begin with Sister Dolores Girault, D.C., whom played an important role in the founding of the center, whose first service delivery site was a two room pediatric clinic in the back of a west side church to address a diphtheria epidemic that caused many death among children in San Antonio. In 1972, CommuniCare Health Centers, then known as Barrio Comprehensive Family Health Care Center (BCFHCC), saw patients at its first location at 1102 Barclay, on the west side of San Antonio. In 1980, due to Sister Girault's advocacy efforts, BCFHCC became designated as the first Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in the San Antonio area from the Heath and Resources Service Administration (HRSA).

Today, the original location now known as the Barrio Family Health Center consists of over 40,000 square feet state of the art facility with electronic medical and dental records and has 46 exam rooms, 4 counseling rooms, and 11 dental operatories. In 2009, the Barrio Family Health Center served 22,796 patients, totaling 80,847 visits.     

On March 1, 2000, CommuniCare Health Centers officially began offering health care services to the Eastside of San Antonio by merging with the Ella Austin Health Center. Ella Austin Health Center had a rich history of serving the resident's of the east side for over 20 years.

In 2005, Barrio Comprehensive Family Health Care Center, Inc. began doing business as CommuniCare Health Centers. In that year, we opened the Dr. Frank Bryant Health Center another state of the art 40,000+ square foot facility on the city's east side at 3066 East Commerce. The Dr. Frank Bryant Health Center has electronic medical and dental records with 24 exam rooms, 3 counseling rooms, and 18 dental operatories. In 2009, the Dr. Frank Bryant Health Center served 17,744 patients, totaling 61,420 visits.

In February of 2009, we expanded our services into Hays County with the opening of CommuniCare Health Centers - San Marcos.   The clinic is located across from Central Texas Medical Center and offers family medicine, pediatric, and behavioral health care services.  In its first year of operations it served 3,918 patients in 10,514 visits.

In September of 2010, we opened our newly built 20,000 square footage facility in Kyle located on 2810 Dacy Lane next to Science Hall Elementary School.  CommuniCare Health Centers-Kyle is our newest state of the art facility with electronic medical and dental records with 24 exam rooms, 2 counseling rooms, and 7 dental operatories.  This location offers Adult and Pediatric Medicine, Dentistry, and Behavioral Health Services.

We will be opening our newest site in the Northwest area of San Antonio in the Fall 2012.  Our CommuniCare Health Centers – Northwest will feature a 20,000+ square footage facility with 38 exam rooms and 2 counseling rooms, located off Callaghan and I-10 West.  This location will offer services in Adult and Pediatric Medicine, After-Hour Urgent Care, Behavioral Health, and Lab Services.
